I have often said that because Guildford has many affluent residents, the gap between those who can live comfortably and very comfortably compared to those who can’t is probably one the largest in the country. The disadvantaged communities in our borough are suffering not just incredible poverty but also relative poverty compared with those living relatively close by.

At the end of last year, we started a 6 week pilot project with The Heart Centre in Woking. The Stability project brought displaced young people together with horses in a programme built around systemic coaching, horsemanship and language training, with a therapeutic focus on self-esteem, communication and coping strategies.

Payen renews its Corporate Ambassador role and provides Covid19 support
Guildford Philanthropy is delighted to announce that Payen a technology company based on the Surrey Research Park and a Corporate Ambassador of the charity has both renewed its ambassador status for another year and pledged support for the work Guildford Philanthropy is undertaking with local charity Foodwise TLC, providing meals to vulnerable local people during the Covid19 crisis.

End of Grant Feedback – The Bike Project
A young person was referred to the project in January 2018, as a ‘last chance’, having been excluded from a special behavioural and emotional needs school. There were many issues around his attitude and behaviour that meant he couldn’t be in a classroom. He had also been removed from two work experience placements with local small businesses because of the behaviour he demonstrated. At first, it wasn’t easy working with him but once we had established a code of conduct and understood his wider situation, we were able to engage with him. In fact, he became a model example of why we created the formal ‘alternative learning provision’ for Year 10 and year 11 pupils excluded from mainstream school. He ended up staying with us for 18 months, progressing through a Level 1 and Level 2 cycle mechanics qualification which allowed him to secure a place on a motor mechanics course at Farnborough Tech this September. Without the intervention of the Bike Project it is most likely that he would never have achieved any qualifications and would certainly not have gone to College. We watched him grow up, mature and turn his life around while he was here.
