Karate for Mental Health

Karate For Mental Health was given a grant of £2,340 by Guildford Philanthropy and launched its free programme of karate training in August 2025. Adults from all walks of life are welcome, with a special focus on individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and those living with disabilities or health challenges and who are unable to access conventional fitness programmes.

Held once a week in term time, in a fully equipped martial arts studio, the sessions provide a safe space where everyone – regardless of ability – can experience the mental and physical benefits of martial arts. Tailored to suit individual needs, the sessions focus not only on physical fitness but also on mindfulness, stress relief, and resilience-building, creating a holistic approach to well-being.

These free classes have already had an impact. Participants are reporting feeling uplifted, more confident and socially connected, with the classes described as ‘life changing’. Anxiety is reduced among the attendees, their energy is greater and the classes are creating a strong sense of belonging.

Les Bubka, on behalf of Karate for Mental Health, said: “This promising start shows the power of inclusive Karate to support wellbeing and build meaningful community connections. Thank you once again to Guildford Philanthropy for your continued support in helping us make a lasting difference.”

Guildford Philanthropy panellist Katie Czop, who also works for Guildford Borough Council, took time out to visit one of the classes run by Karate For Mental Health and had the chance to meet some wonderful people who shared their stories with her. “It was so special to see the difference these sessions are making, and it’s thanks to Guildford Philanthropy that these amazing classes can run,” said Katie.

What have the participants said?

“It helps me so much with what I’m going through. I’m going through a really hard time right now and these classes are the only thing that take my mind off it. I’ve also made so many new friends who have been supporting me throughout.”

“These classes have got so many layers. It builds confidence and self-esteem, it helps slow your mind down and it helps you to meet new people.”

“I had cancer when I was 13 and it completely knocked my confidence. I never used to socialise and these classes were the first time I actually got out of the house to meet people. They’ve given me such a confidence boost and have truly transformed me. Being surrounded by others who understand what you’re going through makes you feel empowered and supported. I feel more body positive and healthy and I love being able to help others too. These classes are my safety net and my lifeline – without them, I honestly don’t know where I’d be.”
